Adult Faith Formation

What Is Advent?

- from Dick Webster

You may have opened the windows on an Advent calendar … or lit the candles in an Advent wreath, but what else do you know (and do) in this season of the church year which includes the four Sundays before Christmas? This year Advent begins on Sunday, November 27. I will begin a series of hourly conversations focused on the themes and activities of Advent. Join me each Sunday at 11:00am in the downstairs classroom to move away from our busyness toward a time of quiet reflection and shared learning.

Ꚛ Beginning & Remembering
Ꚛ Preparing & Waiting
Ꚛ Anticipating & Coming
Ꚛ Reflecting & Celebrating

Over the centuries, Advent has taken on different emphases. Once it was a time of preparation for new Christians to be presented for baptism. By the 6th century, Advent was focused on the second coming of Christ as the judge of the world. Only much later was this season linked to Christ’s first coming at Christmas. Advent has been both a time for fasting and a time for celebration … both a time for preparation into the future and a time for reflection events in the past. What will Advent mean for you this year? What will you be doing during this short season? Let us set aside an hour each Sunday to reflect together on the meaning of Advent in our busy lives.
